On a Serious Note

There has been more and more hatred on here in the last weeks. First I ignored it, but now I feel like I just can't and shouldn't. I never ever opened this blog in order to deal with haters and if there are people who have nothing better to do but to come here and freak around over an actor they hate or over the way I deal with this blog, I really wonder if they have nothing better to do with their time.

Anyway - I thought about turning the blog into a purely private blog as this is what it was intended to be first. I never thought so many of you would find the blog and like it and participate. But then again, I also really like the interaction, I like most of you people here and I don't want to just close it all and never ever hear from you again. After all, the interaction makes it much more fun.

There is an option on Blogspot that would be sort of "in the middle" - I could close the blog from public viewing and make it viewable only for "invited users". That would mean I could allow those of you who want to to keep on reading the blog in the futuer and at the same time keep away Anonymous Posters who just come here to bash everything without any reason at all.

Before I do this, I'd like to know what you guys think about it because I feel a bit like this is not a decision I have to make on my own but rather together with all of you, the "good people" I've met on here and I've really started to like.

  1. set comments to be approved first
    and delete them
like letters to the editor they will disappear when they can not see the fruit of their abhors

single one out once in a while and repost their comment...perhaps a weak-hate-of-the-week feature? ...or better yet message gallo and ask if vince is interested in you forwarding all the unapproved hate mail and then vince can comment on it and you can post that...that way gallo gets the last word...bashed!

  2. Never mind the haters. If they didn´t admire something they wouldn´t take the trouble of critizicing it. Really, make as if they don´t exist, there´s nothing on earth they can do other than bitch their petty grievances.

The notion of Vincent Gallo even remotely caring in regards to the "negative" things people say is a joke.
Especially when they post as anonymous. Some people are jerks in general and for one to be concerned with such mean and minor things is exhausting.

The blog is nice and helps inform. Mel is nice and does well in maintaining the posts. Whatever she decides is fine.

  4. I've been reading through this and maybe it's just me, but it's nothing compared with the hatred I came across towards Vincent over the years. I never get those people spending so much energy on things they hate. What's the use in the first place? We don't love him any less no matter how much they think they should bash him. What do they know in the first place? I met him and he surely is quite a character, but not even half as bad as some assume he is. So screw them Vincent is SWELL and the funniest guy I ever met. Ignore them and just delete what you don't like.

  13. I was the one who wrote "you're slacking off on this blog!" I hope that is not the "hate" you are referring to. I just notice lots of news/ videos and no updates. Sorry if I mis-expressed my enthusiasm. You should keep it up and public. Of course a blog about VG is bound to get some hate.

  14. Don't make the blog closed! I just discovered this blog, and I'm sure there are other fans that would love to see this blog too. They might not know it exists if its closed. Just moderate comments manually.

  17. I enjoy this blog a lot BUT if too many crazies are coming on here...and if people have nothing better to do than criticize Mel, than maybe this format should change...if people don't realize she is busy and maybe doesn't post everything straight away this site http://community.livejournal.com/gallo_news/ was used a lot in the past I believe that is where Mel posted about this blog...that site would allow others to share info about vincent and there would be less pressure on Mel...

  18. I'm sure whatever you decide is fine. I would say to keep it as open as possible, since sometimes people with the most inside/fresh news or information don't want to be easily identifiable. At least I know that is how I feel. But if wading through all of the garbage and trolls is making this blog unwieldy, make it more restricted.

And for people complaining that there aren't enough updates, there isn't really a lot for Mel to post if there's not much going on in the world of VG. He is not super public anymore about projects, and doesn't do too much press, so that leaves a void. He is not really a public celebrity in my opinion. He doesn't have a blog or twitter or whatever other dumb things people fill their time with, and he's not mainstream enough to be chased around by TMZ on the regular (anyone remember the one time he popped up outside of Mr Chow's in LA, mugging for paps? classic).

He wrapped on Essential Killing a while ago, is now filming that other movie ("Loosies"), and is probably still editing and dealing with the legal headaches of Promises Written on Water (which will probably never get a release). Other than that, living his life obviously, which is full as he has a lot of interests.

I'm one of the people who used to post to the Livejournal community a lot with old and weird stuff I would find relating to him, and it was a lot of work digging that stuff up. I don't have that much free time anymore, unfortunately.

  22. I read this blog on weekly basis but I rarely comment, so I was not aware of the problems you are having.
Still, please do not close the blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is letting those posters win!

Maybe approving the comments before publicly posting them would be a good idea, but extra work for you.

  35. Anon,
Were you the ebay seller of that magazine? I wanted it badly, as I collect a lot of "alternative" fashion/lifestyle magazines from the 90s as well as VG stuff, but don't have the funds right now.

Did you end up finding a buyer? Are still looking to sell it?

And Mel, did you ever end up finding that magazine Lodown? Was the interview/feature any good? Could you possibly be able to scan it or post snaps?

Also, does anyone have this magazine, know if the feature is any good, if the interview is in the original English?

  36. Also, very curious and happy about the design work being done for a poster for PWOW. That is a very good sign that it'll get some kind of release or it'll at least screen somewhere someday.

Maybe some kind of esoteric anachronistic luddite "miniature theater" like he talks about on his KCRW interviews from way back. Little hole in the wall for the cinephile, etc.

  37. Hey old hand

I contacted the seller pete about the magazine a while back. Sometime later he got back to me and sent a summary of the article and a picture. Here:

breaking up isn't hard to do

I realized that the article is in fact this from Vincent's website:

    http://www.vincentgallo.com/music/index.html

I posted all this in the thread below at 10:02 and 11:08 but you must of missed it!

  38. Anon,

Thanks for the heads up. I did miss your responses, and I'm glad to find out the article is already available on-line. That picture is great though, wish I could've had the dough to buy the magazine. Although I don't think it ended up selling anyway? I don't remember.

I'm still looking around for copies of D-Mode and Lodown, or at least more info about the content within. The D-mode interview seems to be in Spanish, so I doubt the translation captures his way of speaking very well, and it would be a pain in the ass to translate back into English anyway.

I often with this blog had a forum component, as communicating via comments is very inefficient, but oh well.

    Again, thanks anon!

  39. Hey old hand

The Lowdown interview was up on their site, but it now seems to have disappeared and I didn't get a chance save it. Mel claimed that it wasn't the complete article anyway, but I don't think she realized that there were six pages to flip through.

Can't find anything on D-mode issue 142. As you said, it's in spanish so would need translation.

Mel, why do people talk about perfumes in this blog? Vincent Gallo, nothing else, except Prada and Guerlain?

  41. FrauW - where did you find that comment?

And, as you all might have guessed, decided to keep going with this. Thanks for all your kind words, that really meant a lot to me :)

  42. Some of the comments written in morse code deal with this perfume stuff. Some people don't seem to realize that there's a CW translator online. Hm...

  43. I love your blog and love Vincent Gallo! Keep the blog open, please!
